101 Projects in 1001 Days

Yesterday, I was reading thru posts on Miracle Morning group on Facebook and someone had suggested this link to create 101 projects in 1001 days as a goal setting exercise for someone who doesn’t know what to do. I thought it was perfect for me. I’ve been feeling like I’ve been wasting away my idle time on my off days. First of all, I’m not used to have so many days off, so it gets me restless. I try to go hiking with friends and stuff like that, but it seems like I might have more and more free time as overtime is out of the picture for a while.

Without any delay, I created the account and off I went to add my goals to the list. They have so many suggestions for the list that I didn’t need to come up with anything of my own. I might add some of my own later on. I also added one category that listed the things I’ve already done in the past. Just gives a good feeling that even though you feel like you haven’t done  much, things that you take for granted are in other people’s wish list/bucket list. Looking at that list makes you feel more grateful about things you’ve already done.

I decided on three lists, one to finish by 101 days, another to finish ‘someday’ and one that I’ve already done.

Someday:

  1. Plant a Tree.
  2. Run a marathon.
  3. Visit all 50 states.
  4. Eat a salad from my own garden.
  5. Hike Mount Kilimanjaro.

Getting my feet wet

So, after being jobless for almost two and s half year, I’ve finally decided to get some training to get back in the field. I can’t say that I’ve been jobless, but it’s not the job that pays my bills without stressing out. I’m working 15-30 hours at HomeGoods store and 40-50 hours as caregiver for Home Instead per week. So, yes, it pays my bills, but I end up working 60-90 hours per week to barely survive. Any month that I don’t have to get help from kids is the good month.

Anyway, I’m scared about the training, it’s not what I’ve normally done before, but as always, no pain, no gain. It’s 8 weeks training program. I think class meets once s week, every Saturday. Not sure for how many hours. I haven’t figured out the details yet, one thing I know is that I have drained my saving account for this class ($995), do I have high hopes that it will pay off in the end.

Barely Surviving

So, it’s been a week already! I wish I can say that I’ve loved being home, but I’ve hated it! Most of the time, it feels so suffocating.

On Monday, we had a little scare.. Ba was complaining about her left arm hurting. So, I took her to get it checked out at Valley Care Hospital. They did EKG, checked blood pressure three times at intervals, did the blood test, did the sensory tests on her arm.. everything came out normal. Which makes me feel better, but I sure hope, it doesn’t come up later as something that went undetected.

Neil had his Court of Honor at Boy Scouts. He got his merit badge for cooking. Finally! He had completed  everything in last May, but obviously, the paperwork didn’t get done for it.

Rest of the week has been a blur. I’ve hardly done anything. I did go for workout on Wednesday. That was a good change. But I will still continue to go in early morning on my regular days. After workout, I stopped by at Costco and New India Bazar for grocery shopping. Hopefully, I’m good for 2 weeks.

Friday, CrossFit Games started and I was tempted to sign up for it. But I know that I’m not there yet. My numbers won’t mean anything. I still did the workout (AMRAP  in 10 minutes – 15 Power Snatches, 30 Double unders). This was the first time I actually did the DU as part of the workout. I always end up doing singles (x4). So, that felt good! I ended up with 95 reps.

I needed to stock up on groceries from Sikandar, so after the workout, I went to mom’s home till store opened. Kalpu was gone for her workout, so I didn’t get much time to hang out with her. Mom had her annual check up at 11 too, so they needed to leave at 10:30. I think I’ve stocked up enough for 2 months ($165 later). Now, this month starts with real challenge of lower grocery budget.

After I came home on Friday, Pooja and I had our Downtom Abbey date! We watched 2 episodes. As we were done watching and admiring that this was the best season so far, we said that only one more day till next episode! It wasn’t till later that I realized that it was the season finale!!! :( We totally didn’t see that coming! No wonder, the episode was 1.5 hour long! But there were no real cliffhangers. I’m already going thru withdrawals!

Friday evening was quiet without Neil and Avni. Neil left for his chill camp and Avni had soccer tournament. Avni returned on Saturday around 5. Neil got back at 11:30 on Sunday morning. I made Poha Aloo Tiki for lunch. Kids loved it!

Today, I got confirmation of my Unemployment Insurance. Along with that, got some other forms to fill out for job search. Getting it in the mail makes it a reality that I may have been ignoring. I just hope that I’ll survive next 6 months.

Morgan Territory Park Hike

First thing in the morning, when I got to kitchen, I was reminded that if I plan on staying home for a while, I’m going to need lots of patience. It’s only Sunday! My first day off isn’t even till tomorrow and I’m already dreading it! :( Not having support from one person that you should be able to count on, doesn’t help the matters.

Anyway… I had laid out the plan for entire day. I had decided to make Khaman for lunch, but then, JK mentioned about sev-khamani. So, I told him that we have some in the freezer that we can have on the side. So, we had khaman and sev-khamani for lunch. Neil had been craving for tortillini for 2-3 days, so I let him make some of that too.

I really wanted to go visit mom with kids in the afternoon, but that plan got chopped off. Pooja wanted us to go hiking at Morgan territory anyway, so that’s what we did. It was such a beautiful hike! The trees and atmosphere is almost like rain forest. I can not believe that we’ve never been there for all this years. It’s right in Livermore!!! As Pooja and Neil mentioned, we have so much beauty right here in our own town and we drive 3 hours to go looking for it! Of course, nothing can compare to beauty of Yosemite, but this one is a great substitute when you only have 2-3 hours.

20140223-230432.jpgOn our way to the park, we spotted one really futuristic spaceship looking vehicle. It was so cool and interesting! At first, we thought it was one of those remote control car or something. As we got closer to it, we noticed that there was a man sitting in there riding it! I had to post it on Facebook right away to find out what it is. Turns out, it’s Recumbent. Darcy’s dad in making one of those!

20140223-231326.jpgAs soon as we got home, it was time for me and Avni to go to Safeway to sell Girl Scout cookies. I was the only adult there. I usually look forward to cookie booths to catch up with Melanie. But this year, she refused to sell cookies because of the higher prices. They raised the prices from $4 per box to $5 per box this year. It wasn’t too bad being alone. I had fun joking around with girls. It was much needed tome away from home.

On our way home, Avni and I stopped by at Mr. Guido’s home to pick up harness that we forgot from last week’s rock climbing. Then, stopped at Target to buy bananas and apples. JK had made pizza on tortilla for dinner.

Palak paneer!

20140222-224816.jpg

There was a function for senior citizens at Livermore temple today. JK took Ba-dada to the temple at 10 and then, went to office. Pooja was working at library at 12, so I made masala pasta from last night’s leftover pasta. As I was cooking corn with jalapeño, garlic, ‘lasaniu marchoo’ and garam masala, Neil came to kitchen and frowned at the thought that we still needed to finish the pasta from last night. Just then, I dumped entire container of pasta in corn! LOL He was just shocked at that. he didn’t see that coming! LOL

Avni had soccer practice at 1, so I dropped her off at the park. I would’ve let her take the car, but I was expecting a call from Ba-Dada at 2, to pick them up from temple. JK ended up picking up Avni from the park as he was just leaving from office. I asked him to pick up milk from Costco on his way home as we were completely out and would save me a trip. Just as he was picking up Avni, I got call from Ba, so I had JK pick them up too. I saved myself 3 trips!!!

Pinka was on FB and we ended up talking for a bit. Then, I just decided to call her instead. Once I gave a phone to JK, that was end of it! We had been talking to her over hour and half. I had to remind him that it’s already midnight for her in UK! She’s going to Mansarovar, India in June and want me to join her. That would be one awesome trip. Let’s see how things go by then!

JK had picked up baby spinach from Costco to make masala palak paneer. He wanted to try it out after it was posted on ShowMeTheCurry yesterday. It turned out really good! He had told Pinika that he’s making it tonight, so he wanted to make sure that I post the photo on FB and give him the credit for it! :) Neil didn’t get to try it because he was gone for birthday party at his friend Andrew’s home. But he made sure that we save it for him for tomorrow. He hates it when we try out new recipe in his absence.

I did my one last splurge on scrapping supplies. But I got really great deal at $8. I got 5 items (journaling cards, alpha, templates.. ) from Julie Billingsley and photo masks, alpha, notecards, paint cards by Misty Cato. I had $13 coupon from Juile. On top of this, I got 3 mega kits for FREE!  Couldn’t beat that! But this is it. I won’t be buying anything more until I have better income. Oh, I also got mega journal card sampler pack from the Lily Pad. The pack contained 50+ cards!!! What a great freebie! There are some really good cards in that pack!

I made tiny progress on my Project Life page. I want to finish journaling on it before I go to sleep! Let’s see if I can make it happen!

New Journey!

So, today was my last day of job. I don’t know what future holds for me. But I have a feeling that I’m really off to a great start! Let’s see how my day went today. It was full of little bursts of happiness!

I woke up at my regular Friday morning routine at 4:30, but hit the snooze button twice and finally got out of bed at around 4:50. I don’t know how, but I found myself with so much extra time before I was supposed to leave home. Even though, I took my time making smoothie, getting ready, I got to my CrossFit training almost 15 minutes early! Oh, and on the way, I called MJ. I told him that it was my last day of work. I also told him that I was ok with it and that everything will be ok. He told me that his blessings are always with me and that I’ll be fine. It was just so good to talk to him after so long!

At CrossFit, I hit 135 wall balls in 12 minutes. I was hoping to finish 150 in 12 minutes, but ran short by just a few. However, I didn’t feel it as painful or annoying as others did. I don’t even feel any kind of soreness or anything. I know that I should’ve used 14# ball rather than 10#. But I wanted to see it first if I can finish it with 10# before I move on to 14#.

On my way to work, I called Hasumasi in Nadiad. I haven’t talk to her in a while either! It was great to catch up with her.

Just as I parked my car at work and I was looking at Facebook, I saw that Kalpu had posted a photo of sunrise from her early morning hike. Just as I was about to type a response to her, she called me! She was planned to go to Mt. Diablo in afternoon with Sapna and wanted to see if I would want to join her. After some back and forth, I agreed to join her. since it was going to take same amount of time as I usually go to her home for lunch.

When I got in office, I checked my emails and guess what? I had a message that I had won $13 gift certificate to one of the designer for my scrapping goodies!

Now, if you’re keeping count, that’s 5 happy moments. And it’s only 8 o’clock!!!!

I had few emails of goodbyes and how they’re going to miss working with me. It was heartwarming that they actually marked their calendar for today!

At 12, Kalpu and Sapna came to pick me up for our drive to Mt. Diablo. Weather was gorgeous! We stayed up at the summit for about half an hour before heading down. It was just so refreshing! As Janis said, that was my little celebration for my last day of the job.

Because of our drive, I missed having lunch at home with mom. So, mom called me later asking me about lunch. But I just couldn’t take another half hour for lunch after coming back from Diablo. I’ll have to make it up another day.

Kalpana was still around when I got back, so I had a chance to talk to her for few minutes and say proper goodbyes. Kerry had Dr. appointment, so she came to hug goodbye before leaving.

Hardest was to say goodbye to Tina. Oh, I’m sooooo going to miss talking to her! :( But even she had some good news to share with me. She is pregnant!!!!! I’m so happy for her! It was just so emotional to turn off my Q from her. Finally, I just had to shut it off. Otherwise, I would’ve been there for another hour and wouldn’t want to let go of her! I didn’t think it would be so hard for me, knowing we still stay in touch by text messages and emails over the weekends. We can still do the same on daily basis. We both agreed that it just won’t be the same!

Finally, I went to Janis and said that I’m ready to leave. That was another hard one. Not emotionally as charged as with Tina, but I’ve worked with her for 5 years. We had some great times and laughter over some wacky test cases. She had been a great boss to me. I can’t deny that.

After work, I was meeting Jody for dinner at Chili’s. Linda Funderburk was there too. I had a great time talking to them. After the dinner was over, Jody and I talked in parking lot by my car for over 40 minutes! It felt good to have some heart to heart talk.

Got home at about 9, soon after, Neil and Avni came home too. They had gone out with friends. Today was Avni’s first day with car all by herself. Spent some time with Pooja and Avni , hung out with them for few to catch up with them.

Overall, it had been a great day!!! I couldn’t have asked for a better beginning of my new journey to wherever it’s taking me!

Meeting Pinika tonight!

Short summary of the week…

Went to Kalpu’s for lunch on Friday. I asked her to make Pizza quessadilla. Her niece Sapna is moving here next month, so I’m excited about it. I don’t know why *I* should be excited about it, but I am hoping Pooja will make friendship with her. They used to get along great when they were younger. Pooja or Avni doesn’t have any Gujarati friends here, so I’m looking forward to have at least someone of their age to relate to.

On Friday evening, JK and I went out for dinner at Chaat Bhavan with JK’s friend Sameer Shah and his wife. She’s just came from India about a month ago. It was great to meet her. And I might’ve gained a new friend. I invited them over for dinner on Saturday. I made dal baati and gatta biryani for dinner. We sat and chatted till 11 (both nights), which doesn’t happen very often. Inviting her for dinner motivated me to print all the recipe cards I’ve been meaning to print for longest time. I ‘extracted’ them from my Project Life pages and sent them to print at Costco. I printed 3 copies of it.. one for me, one for her (Jaimini) and one for Kalpu. Now, I’m thinking I might give my copy to Pinika.. not sure yet.

Sunday, Ba, Neil and I cleaned up boxes from Neil’s room. Rearranged some stuff, put away other stuff in different piles – donate, throw away, give away to Dhaval as he’s just starting his new home. Got lots more to go thru, but we were planning to go to Kalpu’s home for dinner at 4:30 as soon as Pooja came home from work. Jayshreeben and Tusharkumar are here from India, so dad had invited them for dinner. We only meet Margi when Jayshreeben is visiting or for Sundarkand path at her home or Rajubhai’s home.. but I always enjoy visiting her.

Monday.. went for CrossFit training in the morning… I did 640 jump ropes and 160 sit ups in 19:22 minutes. I have a long way to go in improvements.. but I’m working on it. Avni is staffing for Weblo (cub scouts) camp. Neil had stayed at Arnav’s on Sunday night, so I picked him up on my way home for his boy scouts meeting. Kalpu had spilled the beans and told the boys about Neil joining them for Alaska trip. Neil had a big grin on his face! :) He felt that his friends are going to think that he’s spoiled for making so many awesome trips this summer! I got to see awesome video trailer that Bruce made of their Seabase trip. I’m looking forward to get my hands on rest of the pics.

Yesterday, I picked up grocery from Costco to make olive salad sandwich mix. Neil and Avni helped chopping everything to make the mix. It’s been our favorite filling for the sandwich.

I had thought that Pinika was staying at San Jose, so when I initially asked her to come to my home and caravan to go to Yosemite and she said that it might be out of the way.. I didn’t push her. But this morning, I realized (with JK’s help) that she’s staying in San Francisco and will be passing right by our home, I asked her to stop by for dinner before start driving to Yosemite. This way, we can all go there together. They all are looking forward to eat khichadi after having to eat out for whole week! She has rented a home (cabin) for 2 nights. Avni is looking forward to it. Unfortunately, this might be her only highlight of summer unlike Neil, who went to Washington DC (from school), Camp Royeneh (boy scouts), Sea Base, Florida (boy scouts) and Alaska (with Arnav)!

Great week!

Neil came home from Sea Base, FL yesterday. He had a blast there! They went snorkeling, fishing, slept in hammocks, lived on ‘Island time’…

While the boy scouts’ boys and dads were gone having fun on the island, us moms made the best out of it too! Jody, Myriam and I met for dinner on Thursday night. Then, I went to the meeting on Monday because I needed to deliver some t shirts. I was expecting a short visit since I didn’t have Neil at the meeting. Instead, I ended up staying in park till 10pm talking with Jody and Roxanne!!! They’re just so much fun to talk to! Then, Jody invited Roxanne for Tuesday dinner that we were having with rest of the moms. Deanna, Linda (Thomas’ mom), Myriam also joined us for dinner. We ended up staying till the close of the restaurant. We were still hanging out in parking even after the restaurant closed and owners left from there. I definitely had a great social week!

Avni got her learning permit for driver’s license today!!! I’m so not ready for another teenage driver! She’s super excited about it!

Lazy weekend

Weekend was fairly light. Didn’t need to go anywhere. One thing led to another and we started sorting out stuff from the storage shed. I’m glad to get things going. It’s like we know that we need to keep moving, but everyone is afraid to start it up. No one is realizing that there is only a month left before the move and we don’t have many weekends left. Time will fly before we know it! I know for sure that JK isn’t going to lift a finger in this entire move. That’s just the way he is. It frustrates me at times, but I just have to deal with it.

Any time, we were packing things, first question I started asking/consulting with Avni.. WHERE will this go? If we can’t assign a place for it, maybe it doesn’t need to come with us. If we assign a place, we dedicate a box/bucket for the like items. Later, we went to Costco and Walmart to pick up packing tape, sharpies and duck (duct) tapes to color code the boxes based on the rooms.

Avni went to the movie with her friends in the evening and Pooja went to help Chloe with wedding photography of a friend of a friend. So, it was just me, JK and Ba.

Sunday, Avni and I started cleaning up medicine/misc cabinet next to my room. I loved how it all worked out. Cleaned out lots of unnecessary stuff. Threw away expired/unwanted items. Added some items in donation bag. We made labeled boxes for flashlights, spare batteries and toothbrushes. Now, those boxes can go into hallway cabinets and they’re ready with their labels. I was still questioning the idea of labeling everything, but after seeing these labeled boxes, I think I’m warning up to the idea. I will be doing more of it. I might even do entire pantry that way by putting like items in the baskets or something.

I finally finished reading the book ‘The Host’ by Stephanie Meyer, so I asked JK to rent the movie when he was dropping off Dada to Kohls. Watched it before dinner. I’m glad I read the book before the movie. Movie itself was super slow and not much substance to it. Book is much better! Had fajitas/quesadillas for dinner. Finished up 2 Project life pages. All in all, productive weekend!

Just got email from Jody that everyone at Sea Base is back from the island safe and sound. They had a great time there. Can’t wait to hear all the stories! Specially, Neil’s story about the ariline losing his luggage!!

JK just got another prospect to lend the money. Keeping the fingers crossed that this one goes well and we can move a bit forward! It’s nail biting at this point, that’s for sure!
